VX MACHINA

Robots, rigs and design, built with the same precision.

VX Machina is the studio of David Amos, the Visual Machinist. Robot cell simulation and integration, film robotics, 3D and design, built on fifteen years of work on film sets and production lines.

Two-robot welding cell for a client. I built the whole cell in ABB RobotStudio: layout, every element, robot programming and cycle time. More on YouTube

Selected robot cells

Every cell here was simulated and programmed before any hardware was built.

Ten ABB robots destacking barrels onto conveyors in a guarded line

Barrel destacking line

Concept for a client: ten robots destacking barrels onto conveyors behind light curtains. Layout, modelling, programming, safety and cycle time. Watch it run

ABB robot loading a CNC lathe from bar pallets inside a fenced cell

Machine-tending cell

An ABB robot loading a CNC lathe from bar pallets inside a guarded cell, simulated in ABB RobotStudio.

Large ABB robot surrounded by fixture racks, with its SafeMove safety zone shown in yellow

Safety-zoned fixture cell

A large ABB robot serving racks of fixtures, with SafeMove safety zones set up and checked in ABB RobotStudio.

Offline machining path

A KUKA robot machining path programmed offline in Robotmaster, checked for reach and collisions before it reached the shop floor.

What I do

Four kinds of work, one habit: get the details right before anything is built.

Robotics & automation

Robot cells from concept to commissioning: simulation, offline programming, integration and safety.

  • Complete robotic cells for Jaguar Land Rover, Oxford Plastics and Forest Garden
  • Functional specifications, risk assessment, grippers and tooling, commissioning
  • ABB RobotStudio, KUKA.Sim, Robotmaster, Mastercam; full KUKA certification

Film & VFX

Industrial robot arms on major film sets, and the 3D pipeline behind them.

  • Robot motion control on productions including Wonder Woman, Aladdin and Justice League
  • Senior special effects technician on In the Heart of the Sea
  • Co-developed a real-time robot programming workflow in Autodesk Maya

Design & web

Brand identities, websites and online stores, designed with an engineer's eye for detail.

  • Brand identity and Shopify store for Sampaguita Jay, about 1,000 orders to date
  • Figma, Webflow, WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite
  • 3D modelling and technical rendering in Maya, Blender, Rhino and SolidWorks

Communities & Web3

Online communities built with care, on Discord since its early days.

  • A 30,000-member server run with a team of about ten moderators
  • Custom server design, bots and full streaming setups in OBS and Streamlabs
  • Art direction of a 500-piece digital collection that sold out on release

Film credits

Robotics, motion control and special effects. On Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, KUKA robot arms carried the performers through the waterfall sequence.

  • Aladdin2019, Guy Ritchie
  • A Wrinkle in Time2018, Ava DuVernay
  • Justice League2017, Zack Snyder
  • Wonder Woman2017, Patty Jenkins
  • In the Heart of the Sea2015, Ron Howard
  • Jupiter Ascending2015, the Wachowskis
  • Pan2015, Joe Wright
  • Anna Karenina2012, Joe Wright
  • Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows2011, Guy Ritchie

About

I started programming KUKA robots at fourteen, and I've worked with industrial robot arms ever since: on film sets from 2010, and on production lines installing complete robotic cells, from the first specification to the day the line runs.

Alongside the robots, I design brands and websites, build 3D pipelines and run online communities. VX Machina brings that work together under one name: automation and digital craft.
